Wilkes County is ideally located where the Appalachian and Brushy Mountain ranges meet, and it is bordered on three sides by these ranges. These mountain ranges shield Wilkes County from many of the severe weather systems that originate to either the south or west of the county. It is not uncommon for hurricanes, severe thunderstorms, snow or even tornadoes to either be deflected by the mountains or to "leapfrog" over Wilkes County. As the result, Wilkes County employers enjoy fewer lost production and delivery days and decreased employee absences due to weather.
