One of the most notable features of Wilkes County is that it is bordered on three sides by mountain ranges (The Brushy Mountains, Blue Ridge Mountains, and the Appalachian Mountain Range). These mountain ranges serve to protect the Wilkes County area from the adverse weather, often deflecting away major snow and rain storms, as well as major weather events such as hurricanes and tornadoes, which can be common on the windward sides of these mountain ranges.
The result is that Wilkes County employers and business lose fewer productivity hours due to adverse weather than other businesses sometimes even located in adjacent areas.
